LANGUAGE SKILLS


Designers need to communicate new ideas and concepts as fluently as possible so that they may have influence on the imagination and lives of other people.

Designers need to communicate solutions efficiently and precisely if the technical detail of their designs are to be successfully manufactured by others into well finished, working products.

Designers need to communicate fully and creatively in the development of original innovative work, and be able to understand others as designing progresses.

Designers must be proficient in their use of language as they strive to understand their clients and users and develop empathy with other people's problems.

Designers need to be proficient in the technical language of design to be clear in their intrapersonal and interpersonal communication.

Designers need to have a deep understanding and proficiency in communication in order to be able to analyse and evaluate their place and the place of their work in the world, and what it's profound moral and ethical significance and effect their work has on individuals, society, and the world.

This communication can be seen in the form of several facets of language and of visual communication, most powerful and effective when used together (Read more: Dual Coding and Oli Cav) 

Language skills must be developed in written and verbal communication.

Specific technical language skills must not only involve an understanding of the key words and vocabulary but also involve context specific syntax and fluency:  On a fundamental level the designer needs to know how to:

  • Code instruction
  • annotate efficiently
  • write in- depth analysis and evaluation
  • engage an audience  to sell  through the dreams and values associated with their work
  • engage positively and productively with clients
  • know the value of, and have the skill to give a passionate and convincing presentation 

 

Students who develop their oral language skills have a +5 month advantage in development and attainment
